Open Your Heart 2005

The "Open Your Heart" campaign was the first time BLISS and Fairy formed a partnership. Developed to raise the profile of BLISS with consumers, it funded a ground-breaking research project led by Professor Neil McIntosh from the University of Edinburgh.

The project called "Vital Signs Monitoring" tracked signs of distress and organ failure in special care babies, so treatment could be implemented as soon as possible and help prevent major problems occurring. The project was a highly detailed computer-based study that developed a pathio-physiological pattern recognition software programme using algorithms based on data collected from over 2,000 babies. The long-term aim was to produce an innovative cot side monitoring system. The system would be rolled out to hospitals across the UK, benefiting the 80,000 sick and premature babies born each year.

As Professor Neil McIntosh says, "Advances in technology mean that more and more babies born prematurely or who are sick after birth in the UK, survive. But further research needs to be done. The Vital Signs Monitoring Pilot Project will help neonatal nurses and doctors diagnose deterioration in a baby's vital signs more quickly and accurately. This will ensure that specialist treatment can be given as soon as possible. By identifying the earlier signs of distress and organ failure, we may be able to improve the survival of premature babies while reducing the chance of disability, giving them a better outcome."
