Fairy Q&A
Read on to find out answers to frequently asked questions from mums to be, new mums, and from experienced mums
My 1-month-old baby has a slight rash on her body and my GP thinks it might be mild eczema. Is there anything I can do to ease it?
First, at bathtime, only use warm water as her sensitive skin doesn't need soap. Choose natural fibres for bed linen, towels and clothing. Pure cotton helps skin breathe, reduces sweating, and keeps your baby more comfortable. Some mums prefer to wash fabrics and clothing in a Non Bio. "I'd suggest you use Fairy Non Bio to wash any new clothing or bed linen before they're used for the first time. For that added softness, use a Fairy Fabric Softener - approved by Allergy UK" Muriel Simmons, CEO Allergy UK.
I think my 3 month old has nappy rash, her skin looks red and sore, especially in the creases around her bottom. How can I soothe it and prevent it returning?
When cleaning her bottom, you only need to use cotton wool moistened with warm water. Always remember to clean from front to back when cleaning girls. And with boys, gently wipe down his penis. Changing her regularly will help prevent nappy rash and so will using a barrier cream.
Tiny white bumps have appeared on the skin on my baby's nose. What are they?
Don't panic - these are called milk spots and are nothing to worry about. They do not need to be treated and will disappear in a few months.
Why is my baby's skin so sensitive?
Your baby's skin is five times thinner than yours, but you still have the same number of sensory nerve endings. So he's super-sensitive to anything that touches him. His other senses aren't as mature as his sense of touch, so he's particularly susceptible to what feels nice and more importantly, what doesn't.
My baby has eczema and scratches her skin. How can I stop her from scratching?
After bathing your little one in gentle baby bath products, make sure you moisturise his skin so that it feels less dry and itchy. Your GP might prescribe an emollient if his eczema is bad. After you've applied it, dress him in clothes made from 100% cotton, and use light bedding washed in gentle products so that he doesn't overheat and aggravate the itching.
How can I protect my baby's skin from cold winds and showers?
Always wrap your baby up well before taking him outside. Body heat escapes via your baby's head, so a warm hat is essential. Gauge the temperature and conditions before you step out, and don't be tempted to swamp him in too many layers so that he overheats. Remember to keep a buggy rain cover to hand, to keep him dry and protected in wet weather.
How can I protect my baby's skin from the sun?
Protecting your baby's skin from the sun is a must whatever the weather. Apply an infant sunscreen with at least SPF15 to all exposed areas of your baby's skin around 20 minutes before you go outside and again just before you head out. In warmer weather, cover him in a hat and light cotton clothes, but make sure that he's cool, to avoid irritating his skin and making him itch.
Does washing my baby's clothes contribute to his skin sensitivity?
You need to wash your baby's clothes regularly. Many mums prefer to use a Non Bio that's been dermatologically tested. Ensuring that your baby's clothes are as soft as possible is also essential.
Why should I use Fairy?
